Should you buy a home or simply rent one? This question has often plagued the newly-weds who wish to live their own separate lives.
Before making your decision, sit down with your partner and seriously consider the following advantages and disadvantages so you will know which will be the better option for you.
There is no long-term commitment if you simply rent a home. Your lease contract can be for a month or even a year, and you can move out when your contract ends. This can be advantageous especially if you are traveling much too often or if your job requires you to be in different locations.
Renting a home also frees you from the responsibility of having it repaired. Repairs and maintenance costs usually fall under the duty of your landlord, and you must know that it can be very expensive and stressful if you have to deal with such yourself.
A big plus in renting a home is the financial aspect. You don’t have to shell out a lot of money every month as you would probably do if you are going to pay for your own home, and this could mean more extra money for you.
On the other hand, having your own home has advantages, as well. A house is always a good investment, and you can have the option to sell it later, and get a lot of money for it. Also, you can do whatever you please with your own home. You can have it repainted or renovated any time. Finally, owning a home gives you tax advantages because the mortgage interest and the real estate taxes can be deducted from your income tax.
However, owning a home can entail a lot of responsibilities on your part. The maintenance costs of owning a home can be huge, and if you are not in a good financial position, these can cause a big burden on you.
Whether you rent or buy a home, it is essential that you seriously discuss this with your partner. This is a big decision that can have a big impact on your life, and therefore it must not be taken lightly.
